Suddenly being prompted for username and password on new site?

I have a small site that I launched a week ago. All static pages other than one page that emails user inquiries to me. I just had the default permissions and no extra authentication setup, no logins, etc. I changed one word on one page this morning, published the site to our webserver through VS2003, everything worked fine. I modified one other page, basically commenting out a <DIV> tag, published the site. Now it prompts me for a username and password for every page. If I keep hitting the cancel button, the page will eventually display, sometimes only partially (some graphics might be missing, the header and/or sidebar image are missing on some pages), but the page displays with at least most of the info.

I didn't touch the directory/file or IIS configuration, didn't edit the web.config file, etc. I tried un-commenting the DIV tag, but nothing changes. It works fine on the http://localhost web server on my development machine through VS.

What permissions should the default anonymous website visitor have in the website directory/sub-dirs/files?

What can I do to fix this, it's on our live site. Thanks.

After thinking about it and the way the graphics weren't all showing, I dug some more and discovered that when I clicked on my /Images directory, I got an 'access is denied' dialog on the server. I rebooted the web server and then the /Images directory didn't show up at all, so I re-published the website from VS and it works now. Freaky...

Suddenly aspnet_wp.exe memory builds up

A site we are moving from asp to asp.net has a weird problem. During slow
times it's fine and performs great, however when each server gets about 50
to 60 requests/sec, performance is still great but out of the blue the
memory usage goes from 200-300 mb aspnet_wp and keeps going until the
process gets recycled, it is then fine for a short while. We have made sure
there aren't any large datatables loading or any other sort of data that
could be building up. We also set the sql server to stop any with a cost
over 10 seconds for any connections coming from application. We can not
mimic this in our development environment, it only exists on our web farm of
three servers and it happens on all three servers sporadically. We can not
pin point it to any operation or page. However we are using a few COM
objects that have not been recoded in .NET yet such as jpeg manipulation and
encryption. Does anyone have any ideas how to pinpoint the problem, any ways
to determine what object or code is the culprit. This is still unnoticed by
our customers due to the sql state + load balancer and web farm.. but it
gets very expensive on the processors during busy times to have the
aspnet_wp restart as often as 10 minutes or so during heavy load times.

-Billare you disposing the unmanaged objects properly? a lot of the times, this
is the culprit. see about that first then have a look at the memory profiler
available from the framework to trace this issue. here is a link for further
troubleshooting

suddenly a button does not respond anymore in IE - but still does in Firefox !

Why suddenly a button (on my login-page) does not respond anymore onIE, but still does in Firefox. I did not make any changes to the codeof that page!
Thank you for any information concering this problem!
Regards,
Fabian
Please read the following FAQ:
Buttons do not submit anymore in IE
thank you very very much!
1) What I did is to place the "aspnet_client" folder and it's content in my webapplication-folder,
2) I changed in the WebUIValidation.js - file the following
function ValidatorCommonOnSubmit()
{
event.returnValue = !Page_BlockSubmit;
ret_Val = !Page_BlockSubmit;
Page_BlockSubmit = false;
return ret_Val;
}
3) I entered into the web.config the following :
<system.web>
<webControls clientScriptsLocation="aspnet_client/system_web/1_1_4322/"/>
</system.web>

And now it works !
Thank you again !

suddenly cant use breakpoints

this drives me cuckoo....

i have an application i've been working on for months and for some reason today the development environment completely ignores breakpoints. the app just runs and never breaks on any of my breakpoints. this happened to me once before but i can't recall what caused it.

anyone know what causes that?

Chances are you already checked these, but go to Build | Configuration Manager to make sure you're using the Debug mode. Also, run your app with F5, not Ctrl-F5. Finally, if you're using ASP.NET 2.0, be sure the following is in your Web.config file:

<compilationdebug="true"/>

i am in debug mode...

i use f5

i am not using 2.0 (use 1.1)

and yet it always goes right past any break points

close VS and restart it...

Also, is this ALL breakpoints? If you set one in the first page in the page_load does it stop?

i closed it down...restarted it...

put a break on page_load

it ignores it

Check in the Project Properties, make sure that "Enable ASP.Net Debugging" is checked...
it is checked

Check the web.config then...

<compilation.........debug="true"></compilation>

yes...web.config has debug=true

i just rebooted my machine but it still ignores breakpoints

Here's something you can try (copied from some other site):

Select "Debug" from the "Solution configuration" combobox which is embedded
into VS.NET's toolbar. If the project/solution is compiled using the
"Release" configuration, no debug symbols (PDB files) are created. Use this
configuration when compiling the release version of a product. If this
doesn't fix your problem, delete its "obj" and "bin" directories and
recompile.

Suddenly can't load assembly

I am using VS2005, and yesterday I copied a web site from my
development machine to
a Windows 2003 server, and the web site worked fine.
Today I made a few changes on my machine, and tried to repeat the
process,
but I get an error message:
Could not load file or assembly 'BaseRS' or one of its dependencies.
Access is denied
BaseRS.dll is in the bin folder, as it was previously.
Any ideas about what causes this message?What were the "few changes" you made ?
Anything to do with file permissions or the ASP.NET account ?
Did you enable impersonation and now a different account needs permissions ?

Did you try IISReset before doing the deployment.
If not, you may like to do that. Also, clear all your Temporary Asp.net
files from the folder C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary
ASP.NET Files
before you deploy the application.
If that doesn't help you can try Filemon utility from www.sysinternals.com
and serch for access denied after you reproduce the error and save the log
file from the Filemon utility.

The app does use impersonation, and that may have been a change in the
web.config.
(Although it uses anonymous access, and yes there was a reason for this
that made sense at one point).
I can experiment without impersonation and see if that makes a
difference. What would I do if it does?
I'm not familiar with any new deployment procedures, so I figure I
better take a look in help.
But I assumed that copying the folders would work for deployment, as it
did in ASP.NET 1.
Anyway, I'll try Rahul's suggestions as well, thanks.
re:

Run this aspx page :
identity.aspx :
--
<%@. Page Language="VB" %>
<script runat="server">
Sub Page_Load(obj as object, e as eventargs)
Dim user as string = Environment.Username
lblUser.Text = user
End Sub
</script>
<html>
<body>
<asp:Label id="lblUser" runat="server"/></asp:Label>
</body>
</html>
--
That will tell you which account needs permission to the directory
where the BaseRS assembly is located ( the /bin dir, right ? ).

Juan,
Impersonation was indeed the issue. The impersonation user id is from
a different domain.
For some reason this did not cause a problem on my development machine.
I'm not sure if I should address this within the folder system or
within IIS6.
I tried changing the security on the folder (it already had 'Everyone'
with full control)
to give explicit access to this userid, but it didn't help.
Thanks,
Jim
Finally got this working (I think)
After quite a bit more playing around with security for impersonated
user,
I googled some more and saw that I had to grant permissions (full
control) on
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files
and so I'm running...

Suddenly Noticed ASP.net as user account on my computer

Can anyone tell me why "ASP.net Machine A" recently started showing up as one of my user accounts on my computer? Does this have something to do with Service Pack 2? It says it's a limited account and password protect but I didn't set it up. What's the deal?The following FAQ will explain the ASPNET account, and will show you how to remove it.
Why is there an ASP.NET account on my machine?

my problem is similar except it is asking for a password for this account and is now requiring a password for my own account before it will launch windows. I have never set up a password so I don't know how to get into my computer to uninstall the ASP.Net account. Even bringing it up in Safe Mode it is still asking for a password.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Suddenly my web run very slow.

I have very big and complicated website. Suddenly (in the past few days) it started to run very slow. In each page it "can't find" one or two images (usually very small ones like arrow or something) and the browser show "open 1 item…" and stuck. As much as I can remember I didn't change any thing that related to the images or to my home page.

Does any body have idea what can cause such behavior?

Have you rebooted recently? You might have some memory issues on the server.

Nick

oh, yes... again and again.
