suggestions for places to aquire free / standard icons?

I have a need to use a variety of icons, which are typical ones, calendars, email, notepads, etc. I have found some nice ones but they usually end up costing some money. Looking for any good sites or microsoft based resources for icon images.

Any help is appreciated.

Far and away the best site I have ever found for high quality icons at an incredible price (less than $90) is Icon Drawer (http://www.icondrawer.com/buy.php).Eugen Buzuk is an incredible designer and his icons make all of the other free icon resources I've seen look like cheap trash. Take a look at his collections. I think you'll be impressed.
