submitting the form to the browser

I am very new to ASP.NET. We have an asp.NET project that is used to show the state of various sql tables/data. The "proposed enhancement" to that is when the data is updated locally (through another application running on the same network where the database is located), the browser (if someone happen to view the same data over the Internet through a browser) should refresh automatically so that the data is ~accurate~ when viewed. I know that browser uses pull technology, and in order to receive a new data, the browser must "request" it (through a control-generated event or a refresh event generated through timer). When the form is posted back to the server and resubmitted, it will "refresh" the browser view. Since the data must appear on the browser within 10-20 seconds of the actual data update, the refresh must be done quite frequently, and the page will constantly reload, so because of that I am not eager to generate refresh events on timer. Is there any way I can push the newly updated page to the browser from the server without any interaction/request from the browser? Is anybody aware of any other technology that I can use it to accomplish this task? ANy help/hint/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thank you
olaHi ola,

Unfortunately, there is no other technology that will help you with this issue. You are correct in that the brower uses "pull" technology and therefore there is nothing you can do on the server side to initiate this refresh. The only solution is to use client-side script to refresh the borwser.

Chad
Hi ola,

unfortunately a browser only supports the pull way. But maybe this article can be of help to you:Using IE's Web Service Behavior To Create Rich ASP.NET Applications. I know the next version of ASP.NET uses something like client call back functionality that's able to only update small portions of a page without refreshing the whole page.

Of course using this technique still requires to call a method on a time interval.

Grz, Kris.
Chad,

thank you very much for your reply.
I have additional question. When you refer to a client-side script that can be used to refresh a browser, are you talking about a separate program running on the same machine where the browser is open, or it is something incorporated into the web form code that does it on a timely bases? If it was a separate program (which could know which instance of the browser I need to refresh, which form on that instance of the browser is open and how to envoke the refresh on the browser), it would probably work for me. I will just need to find out how to do it (if at all it is possible). Do you know anything about it? Any ideas/suggestions?

Thank you

ola
ola,

I was actually talking about using a JavaScript timer or using the Meta tags to refresh the browser. I think it would be nearly impossible to write a Windows app to know which browser to refresh when. This would be way more work than it's worth. I think your only solution here is to just put code in your page to refresh the entire page every so often. Sorry I don't have the perfect solution for your problem.

Subtracting Date in VB.Net

Need Help!

How do I write the following expression for my project limiting the number of entries on my datagrid by 30 days from Now():

<!--

SELECT * FROM tblGrid WHERE dateEntered between Now() - 30 and Now()

-->

note: dateEntered are the dates in my date field (mm-dd-yyyy)

Thanks a lot.

If you are using VB.NET, you can use DateTime.Add method. There's an exampe in the docs here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/cpref/html/frlrfsystemdatetimeclassaddtopic.asp

Such an easy question

VS 2005 issue

Hi I have a batch file I would like to run - once I kick off a build event for a class library

If you look in project -> properties -> Compile -> Build Events

you can enter commands in 2 windows - pre build and post build

I entered

call S:\Securinfo.NET\Atlantis Release\slnAuthManager.root\slnAuthManager\Business Logic\bllAuthManager\inc.bat

And now all I get is exited with code 1

Any ideas people - please !!!

If you go to the bin (or bin\debug) directory after building the solution, you will see the bat file that Visual Studio creates from your build event.

Open a command line, navigate to that folder, and then type the bat file name at the prompt and it will execute. Any errors should display on the screen.

Summary text doesn't work

I've created a summary text for a method of a class, but it doesn't
appear whem i add it to another project, i can see it only in the same
project.
Thanks
PietroTake a look at this:

XML comments (like all comments) aren't part of a .dll (otherwise the .dll
would bloat in size). As such, as for as your other application is
concerned, there is no summary text. One would think that you could use
the DescriptionAttribute, but this unfortunetly doens't work for
intellisense (just th properties window). The above link shows how to hook
the outputted xml file from the original source to the dll you are
referecing in yoru other project...thus preserving the summary information.

where in the new project dialogue can I see an option to create one.

Suppress keyboard, allow barcode scanner

I posted yesterday about a project I'm involved in to build a login
application using a barcode scanner.

I've solved most of the problems, but one remains. The client want to
disable keyboard input (except at some remote sites where there won't
be a scanner). The session "knows" whether that site should be
keyboard enabled, but unfortunately the output from the scanner is in
the form of keypresses! So any attempt to capture and suppress
physical keypresses in script cannot differentiate between keyboard and
scanner.

Anyone got any ideas?

EdwardNope... you are probably out of luck, especially since it's a Web interface.
You would have to have some sort of client addin/component built and
installed but in the end even that may not help since the scanner simply
emulates a keyboard.

With IE, you cannot disable ALL keystrokes anyways.

If there is a such a requirement, you might want to consider using a
winforms login page instead... and somehow tie it into your web app.

you would need an write active/x control. you would then plug the scanner
into a seperate serial port (not the keyboard). the active/x control would
then poll the scanner's serial port for input, and raise an event on input
for client script to handle. you would use a hidden field that the client
script used to post the login id, so the keyboard would be disabled.

Thanks to you and to all other respondents. It's a fixed price
contract and we've agreed the work, so I'll just tell them to remove
the keyboard. That's the easiest solution, and the most foolproof
(until the scanner goes AWOL).

There are no project files in 2.0 web apps. All of the info that had to be
carried by the project file is in the .sln file. You are fine.

Actually, that's not true, the sln file is a standard MS sln file,
there's no ASP specific project information in there, beyond the normal
solution information. By default (if your not using the ASP.Net 2
projects), the project information is held in the

C:\documents and settings\[user name]\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\WebsiteCache

directory

Switch from Cassini to IIS on a project

I was dumb and created the project as FILE instead of HTTP. I have IIS installed and want to use it instead. How can I switch my project over, or do I have to recreate it and readd my items?

- Right click on the root node of the Solution Explorer

- Goto "Options"

- In the "Server" area, say "Use Custom Server" and set the "Base URL"

done

never mind... found it

START options... :}

switch project from "file" to "web"?

I've taken over a project from another for a webservice. He originally set it up as "file" based, so it's showing up as "c:\path\to\site" in the solution manager. This is causing issues and it should be setup as a website withhttp://virtual/to/site.

Is there a way to switch a file based one to a web based one and have it use IIS ?

Nevermind... just readded it manually to the solution, seemed to work

Hi:

I think you are talking about an ASP.NET 2.0 application?

You can simply make a File System application work smoothly with IIS, by creating a new website poiting to the folder of that application, and open a web path in VS 2005 instead of the File System

Am I getting you correct?

Regards

yes, the issue was that it was under source control...

It's all good now though, thank you.

Hi Curt, I am glad it worked fine now.

Take care my friend,

Regards
