Looking for an all-in-one solution for building and managing subscription or member's only web sites in ASP.NET C#. A quick scope of features are the ability to bill monthly to our subscribers via real-time credit card processing, posting content features (news, articles, blogs, etc), manage subscribers, shopping cart, discussion groups, RSS, flexible searching (tags, etc..) and basic reports.
Any ideas and comments welcomed.
Thanks,
Gio

Hello.
Newbie here, I have a field in a database called status with the values "I" or "A". I need to display "Inactive" or "Active" in a gridview or formview web page. How do I substitute these values.
Thanks in advance.
Is this data being displayed in a datalist / datagrid? You can either create a temp table in your sql or modify your code. If you post your code I can show you how, otherwise you can do something like this in your sql:
create table #temp(
activeInactiveField1 char(5)
, activeInactiveField2 char(10)
-- , your other fields here
)
Insert into #Temp(
-- all fields from your existing sql
from all your existing tables
update #temp
set activeInactiveField2 = 'Active'
where activeInactiveField1 = 'A'
update #temp
setActiveInactiveField2 = 'Inactive'
where activeInactiveField1 = 'I'
select * from #Temp
drop table #Temp
Then you can databind the field in your webform to activeInactiveField2
Hello, Thank you for the quick response. Below is my code. As stated I am a newbie and the filed I am working with is status. Thanks a lot.

You can handle this in RowDataBound event of the gridview. To add this event to your gridview, when in design view of Visual Studio, click on gridview once to get the properties window. From that, go to the events window (identified by a small "lightning" icon) and look for RowDataBound event. Double click on this event and an event hadler will created in your code file. Just copy and paste this code there.
protected void gridView_RowDataBound(object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e) {if (e.Row.RowType == DataControlRowType.DataRow) {if(e.Row.Cells[7].Text =="A") { e.Row.Cells[7].Text ="Active"; }else { e.Row.Cells[7].Text ="Inactive"; } } }Or you can change your select statement - something like select case status when 'i' then 'inactive' else 'active' end as status from blah blah blah...
By the way, it's never good practice to do a select *.
Hi, try this inline IIF statement to evaulate the status field and display conditional text. You will have to first convert your GridView to a template so you have control over the HTML controls.
<asp:LabelID="LabelStatus"runat="server"Text='<%# IIF(CONVERT.ToString(Eval("Status"))="A","Active", "Inactive") %>'></asp:Label>
Thanks I got that suggestion to work in a gridview and formview. ![]()
What if I had another field called type that I had to change
"H" to "Harbor"
"C" to "Civil"
"T" to "Traffic"
"L" to "Local"
You can use the same solutions that are marked as answer to extend the functionality. Like in mine, you can access the columns by their index (0 based). So whatever the index of your "Type" column, access it in RowDataBound event, check the text of the cell, and change it accordigly.
Sorry bullpit,
when I run your suggestion I get the following error message
Compiler Error Message:BC30205: End of statement expected.
I believe your suggestion would work best.
I forgot to uncheck the answer message button
Paste your code here. Please use the InsertCode option in the text editor.

Thanks

Partial Class Default2 Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Protected Sub GridView1_RowDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.GridViewRowEventArgs) Handles GridView1.RowDataBoundprotected void gridView1_RowDataBound(object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e) {if (e.Row.RowType == DataControlRowType.DataRow) {if(e.Row.Cells[7].Text =="A") { e.Row.Cells[7].Text ="Active"; } Else { e.Row.Cells[7].Text ="Inactive"; } } } End SubEnd Class
The piece of code I posted was an event handler for RowDataBound event. An event handler is a method (function) by itself. What you did was that you attached an event handler the way I mentioned (by double clicking the RowDataBound event in designer) but also copied and pasted the event handler that I posted into the event handler that the designer generated. So now you have a function defined in another function, which is not right. Morover, you are using VB and the code I pasted was C#. Change the above code to this:
Protected Sub GridView1_RowDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.GridViewRowEventArgs) Handles GridView1.RowDataBoundIf e.Row.RowType = DataControlRowType.DataRowThen If e.Row.Cells(7).Text ="A"Then e.Row.Cells(7).Text ="Active"Else e.Row.Cells(7).Text ="Inactive"End If End If End Sub
Bullpit,
Thank you very much for your time. I did realize I pasted the code into another function, but neith er way worked for me. I should be able to get this sample to work in other ways for me.
This a very helpful board.
Also, change the column index (7 in the code I posted) to the column index where you want to change the text. That might be the problem. For example, in your gridview, the "STATUS" colum index maybe 4 instead of 7.
Bullpit,
If you do not mind hopw do I get that to work in a Formview?
Thanks in advance
ok, i have a web.config in my main solution directory and i have a web.config in a subdirectory. the only other files in the subdirectory are web user controls, but i would like the web.config in there to be used, as well as the web.config in the main solution directory.
is this possible? I'm not calling any aspx files from the subdir, just using the web user controls from there in other aspx's.
matt.
I don't know, I would think not, because the user controls would be a control in the pages control tree, and such, would probably use the main web.config. Only pages I believe would use a sub web.config.Just try it out to see if it works.
Personally I think that user controls are merged with your page and so the user controls runs in the web.config of that folder where the webform resides. Of course, I could be wrong on that one because I didn't test it.
Grz, Kris.
http://weblogs.asp.net/pwilson/archive/2003/04/09/5261.aspx
I see that it can be done. But I can't get it to work - my .NET just doesn't appear to read the subconfig file. My code looks just like in the page linked above!
The link you provided explains how to put configuration data in an external config file (YourSettings.config) and link to that file from the web.config. It has nothing to do with your original question.
Grz, Kris.
yes it does; it's one potential solution...
"i would like the web.config in there to be used, as well as the web.config in the main solution directory"
if it can be made to work.
i'm not going to *** semantics here - what i'm looking for, now, is how to get this apparently wonderful appSettings attribute to work.
I have very big and complicated website. Suddenly (in the past few days) it started to run very slow. In each page it "can't find" one or two images (usually very small ones like arrow or something) and the browser show "open 1 item…" and stuck. As much as I can remember I didn't change any thing that related to the images or to my home page.
Does any body have idea what can cause such behavior?
Have you rebooted recently? You might have some memory issues on the server.
Nick
I have developed the world's ugliest website -- functions well, but it
leaves a lot to be desired aesthetically.
What are the recommended web graphics programs to integrate with Visual
Studio projects? I don't want to just go out and buy something without
knowing it works well with VS.
Also, how would you integrate it? Just copy and paste stuff?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

SandyMicrosoft has several visual editing tools in beta that can generate UI
elements but these tools are for future releases of Vista and so on. There's
really nothing available now in the context I think you are asking.
I've used PaintShop Pro (PSP) for years myself. It is inexpensive, generally
considered easy to use, and rivals the over-priced PhotoShop. Use PSP for
screen captures of various elements from other sites and paste up various
'comps' (compositions) as reference works. I also recommend you use a
reference book such as "Designer's Guide To Color 2" as it is an excellent
resource for color combinations you can recreate using PSP.
Some of the basic techniques designer's use to make page elements distintive
are 'over-lays' and 'juxtapositions' which is artsy-fartsy talk you may be
able to understand simply by observing the use of these techniques at my
current homepage noting I had to beat myself up with CSS to get the effect
without turning the page into an over-weight slow loading sleeper. I'm also
still using multiple stylesheets because IE has been crippleware and I
haven't mastered the dozen and more CSS hacks IE requires to build
'standards compliant' GUIs.
Get a grip on color, page layout, and a couple of artsy-fartsy techniques
and you're all set for a clean page with distinctive design elements but
remember to go easy on the eye shadow ;-)

That's a good choice.
I use Snagit :
http://www.techsmith.com/products/snagit/default.asp
It does everything I need to do.
PhotoShop is overkill for most situations but
for specialized requirements, it can't be beat.
Its learning curve is quite stiff, though.

PSP is exceptionally good.
However, when I read this post, I thought the OP 'May' be talking about
general presentation rather than just the graphics themselves, such as that
made easier by using packages like Front Page or Dreamweaver etc.
On that subject, I do know two professional designers ( ASP.NET ) who use
third parties to create their design and then back-engineer ( or add
accurately ) the coding to fit the ASP.NET model.
This way, they dont have the less than intuative VS interface for designing
web sites but have the benefit of all the managability features already
built in to Front Page for example.
This can present difficulties in itself and you really have to know what
your doing, but it's how some people work.
It would be nice if one day Front Page could be absorbed into Visual Studio
( At least all the good bits )
;-)

Your comments about Colour are both interesting and incisive.
I think teaching Software Engineers to appreciate Colour may be more
difficult than teaching artists to design web sites. Logical thinkers
rarely make great artists in my humble opinion (get ready for the
flames!!!), although I am sure there are exceptions to the rule.
Marketing departments also have their own interesting take on use of
colours; apparently colours signify things to people. For example, the Roman
Purple/Blue promotes a feeling of reliability, depth and maturity.
All good stuff as they say !

I am trying to do a web page with a network status on it for several apps. I have tried it one way and posted it here but no replies. Any suggestions on how to have it ping a server with many different servers with online if it gets a reply or offline if it gets the time out or cant ping. Any helpe would be appreciated.
Thanks
To simply ping a server it is as simple asMy.Computer.Network.Ping("hostnameOrIp")
It will return true or false.
Well, do one ping per server :P The way ping works is that it tries to send small packets to the destinated IP, if the data gets through we have PING! (funny word btw ;-). Things will get a bit different if you want to check if the server answers on specific ports. But just to do ping on several servers is piece of cake:
If My.Computer.Network.Ping("server1") = true
response.write("Online")
else
response.write("Offline")
end ifIf My.Computer.Network.Ping("server2") = true
response.write("Online")
else
response.write("Offline")
end if
I would setup an ArrayList to hold all the servers, then loop through them, ping, and print their status:
Dim arrServersAs New ArrayList()Dim intCountAs IntegerDim strMessageAs StringarrServers.Add("192.168.1.100")arrServers.Add("192.168.1.101")arrServers.Add("192.168.1.102")For intCount = 0To arrServers.Count - 1 strMessage ="Server " &CStr(arrServers(intCount))If My.Computer.Network.Ping(arrServers(intCount))Then strMessage +=" is online"Else strMessage +=" is offline"End If Response.Write(strMessage)NextHope this helps! Please do not forget to mark the helpful post(s) as Answer so future readers know what solved your problem.
MY is requiring declaration and where is it to be declared?
IfMy.Computer.Network.Ping(arrServers(intCount))Then
Well that is really strange, becuase My works just fine and I have tested it.
It should be an automatically inherited namespace. I guess the only thing I can suggest you to try it to put
Imports My
at the top of the code behind.
Also, are you using C#?
It works to an extent. I have about 14 servers I do this and I want to be able to do:
XXX Online or XXX Offline
YYY Online or YY Offline
Right now it is accounting all of the being online becasue it is going to the first one.
Thanks,
You may find many examples in the following links:
http://asp.net/ControlGallery/default.aspx?Category=34&tabindex=2
http://www.hotscripts.com/ASP.NET/Scripts_and_Controls/Discussion_Boards/index.html
Hope it helps.
How are you doing it now and what problems are you running into?

Survey1-EN.aspx.cs
Survey2-EN.aspx
Survey2-EN.aspx.cs
Survey1-CN.aspx
Survey1-CN.aspx.cs
Survey2-CN.aspx
Survey2-CN.aspx.cs
the only difference between Survey1-EN.aspx and Survey1-CN.aspx is user will see
different language(English or Chinese) in each page. And I have a class called
saveToDB() in each *.aspx.cs, so how can I let each *.aspx.cs call the
standalone procedure so I do not need to have the saveToDB() in each *.aspx.cs?
Thanks.

I've written a two part tutorial on this sort of thing:

You should find it useful. It'll help you onl have 1 page for X languages

Hi,
I need to create a web report that contains data and multiple video avi files. The report should able be exported to other formats , e.g. PDF, web archive.
I am thinking to provide a link to the video file, so when the user clicks on the link, the video is played in a pop up IE window which embeds a media player to play the video. And the link points to a Generic Handler file .ashx.
Else I may need to embed many media players in the HTML to play each avi files.
I need to export this report with all data and videos file. How can this be done with asp.net ReportViewer and SSRS ? Is it possible to intercept the export event and copy the video avi files before export ?
Any suggestions and ideas ?
Thanks in advance
Hello,
You can use gridview to show your reports and just use links for you to download avi files.
However, if you still want to use reportview control, here it is:
